Ramazan begins tomorrow.
Ramazan is the name for Ramadan in Pakistan. This effectively means no drink or food between 4:30am (Fajr prayer) and 6:00pm (Maghrib prayer) for thirty days. [However, it should include the rest of the five pillars and a complete reading of the Qur'an]. I'll leave the spiritual meaning for an expert, or another day.
A friend's blog post describes the spirit of Ramadan better than I can. My own motivations range from simply achieving this pillar of Islam to attempting to understanding the experiences of my students during this period.
****Update****
Ramadam starts in the Americas on October 5, 2005. However, a little astronomical knowledge of the full moon with some geography, or a glance at the Islamic date on the newspaper, reveals that Ramadan starts on October 6th in Asia. An extra day of fasting is not a problem.
